NLHS History Collection Networked with NH Historical Society |
|
The New London Historical Society is one of 10 local historical societies from across the state who are part of the NH Historical Society’s recently launched New Hampshire History Network – a digital gateway that provides centralized access to the state’s rich history and historical collections.
NLHS was selected because it has been, over the past 10+ years and many volunteer hours, converting its 50 years of paper documentation on its extensive collections to PastPerfect, a collections management software designed for use by small historical societies and museums.
In preparing for the launch of the NH History Network in November 2015, Maggie Ford and Barbara Kresse spent uncounted hours in identifying 100 objects (the limit for this initial launch) that would epitomize the essence of our special collections – the horse-drawn vehicles, clothing from the mid-1800s, as well as artifacts of daily life near the turn of the century.
All items were photographed (or re-done if necessary), physical descriptions reviewed, the use and origins updated (to the extent that we have that information).
The New Hampshire History Network, patterned after a similar initiative in Maine, allows the NH Historical Society and local historical societies with digitized collections to make them publicly available as a resource for teachers, schools and researchers. Users will be able to search all the collections and virtual exhibits, view thumbnail images and description of items as well as the full catalog record.
